The project is located on an area of about 5,900 square meters, accessible from Via Pietro Nenni in Bagnolo Mella (BS), previously occupied by the old kindergarten, which was demolished in order to build the new project structure. The building consists in a semi-circular layout of the plexus on the south-east / north-west and north-east / south-west axes in order to expose the classrooms to the best possible natural lighting. The outdoor spaces have been designed to maximize greenery and a combination of permeable flooring and flooring with high SRI, to respectively allow the infiltration of rainwater into the subsoil and limit the local heat island effect. The project site, in addition to being served by public transportation, provides preferential parking for alternative fuel vehicles, carpool, bicycle parking spaces and related changing rooms with showers.

Great attention was paid to the acoustic comfort of interior spaces during the design and selection of materials. All educational and multifunctional classrooms have limited reverberation times thanks to the use of sound-absorbing wall and ceiling panels.

The installation of faucets and dual flush toilets with low water demand, combined with rainwater collection systems, to be reused for recharging toilet cisterns and for irrigation system, guarantees water savings of 89% compared to a base building.

The HVAC system with radiant panels and heat pump, combined with a photovoltaic panel system capable of covering over 25% of the building’s electricity needs, ensures energy savings of over 58% compared to a reference base building.

The environmental impacts related to construction products have been reduced thanks to the use of materials with recycled content (over 20% on a cost basis), locally sourced materials (over 14% on a cost basis), rapidly renewable products (26% on a cost basis), and FSC-certified wood materials (over 62% on a cost basis of all wood elements). During the construction phase, almost all waste was sent to recycling and recovery processes through on-site sorting.

Indoor environmental quality is ensured through the use of construction materials with very low VOC content, careful management of materials and protection of mechanical ventilation systems during construction, and an intense flush-out performed at the end of the works and before the building is occupied.
