ROME, ITALY
Exhibit at the Casa dell’Architettura, Rome, Italy.
June 18 – July 18, 2024
EXHIBITION
The setup consists of a dynamic system that allows various combinations of vertical and horizontal assembly. It is composed of a series of square frames in beech wood treated for outdoor use, with decreasing dimensions from 85 to 75 to 65 cm, assembled in pairs through a wooden arm containing an aluminium rail inside. The three pairs of each dimension are stacked one on top of the other, reaching a maximum height of 220 cm. Each frame can accommodate a PVC banner treated for outdoor use and printed on both sides. The frames are more numerous than the banners to provide the greatest possible exhibition flexibility and adapt to the specific space requirements.
To ensure the stability of the composition, a system of rectangular rotating feet was added to the 85 cm ground frame, which can be extracted if necessary and function as stabilizers regardless of the support surface, without the need for fixing.
The structure’s design consists of 95% wood and 5% aluminium. The latter material is used for the frame joints and the banner support tubes.
All setup frames can be stored in two boxes measuring 90x90x90 cm made of OSB wood panels. Each box can hold 18 pairs of wooden frames, 36 metal tubes to support the banners, and 36 PVC banners. The boxes not only serve as mere containers but can transform into elegant seats and become an integral part of the setup. On some sides of the boxes, general information such as the exhibition’s itinerary and the list of various partners is laser-printed.
The project is designed so that if it becomes necessary to send the exhibition to different places at the same time, each box will have several frames to accommodate all the necessary banners. In that case, only the banners would need to be reprinted, and the boxes could be sent to two different destinations.
The exhibition strategy consists of three pairs of banners of three decreasing sizes for each of the ten good practices. Each banner is housed in the wooden frame and held in tension by aluminium bars.
At the beginning of the setup, an entire vertical element with three pairs of banners is dedicated to the introduction of the entire project. On the front are the SustainabITALY logo and all involved partners, a description of the LEED certification, and the list of projects on display with an explanation of how they meet sustainability principles. The section closes with a representation of the geographical distribution of good practices across Italy. On the back, the four cities hosting the exhibition are listed, and the entire SustainabITALY project is described. The section ends with photos of all involved students with names, and universities of affiliation.
Each project corresponds to a colour chosen based on the dominant colour of the images provided by the architects. The banners sequentially contain the project title, designer, project location, a particularly representative image, a description of architectural and sustainable aspects with various supporting images (including the LEED score card), and finally a quote from the designer. Since the banners are printed on both sides, each project corresponds to another on the back, further emphasizing the three-dimensional and dynamic value of the setup. A QR code linked to the site, allowing for viewing additional images, is present on the project description banner. The exhibition is curated by Francesca Riccardo.
On June 17, 2024, the day before the inauguration and conference, the students began setting up in the gardens of the Casa dell’Architettura near the entrance. It took eleven students, two instructors, and about four hours of work to assemble everything. It was a great experience as the exhibition finally appeared in the space exactly as the students had imagined, with a pleasant scenic effect and clear display.
